Ekiti State Governor, Engr Segun has been appointed as the National Project Champion of the Green Energy Society of Nigeria (GESON), with the society commending the governor for taking steps towards developing the State to green energy capital of Nigeria through the development of solar power and ethanol plants in the State.
  
Governor Oni said in Ado-Ekiti after his investiture that concerted efforts are needed by world leaders to tackle desertification, global warming, climate change and other ecological problems associated with the use of petroleum products and other carbon-based fuels that were presently threatening the existence of man on planet earth.
 
The governor noted that it was time world leaders took decisive steps to save the world from the looming catastrophe.
 
He said available statistics  which indicate that   the Sahara desert was moving southwards at a rate of  two-third  of a  kilometer  annually  was quite alarming,  stressing that all hands must be on deck   to  save Nigeria and the entire sub-Saharan Africa from an  irreversible but  avoidable calamity.
 
Governor Oni said in spite of his rigid policy of not taking awards, chieftaincy titles, honorary degrees and fellowship while in office, he would accept the title since  it involves positive efforts towards saving the planet earth which is man’s only natural  habitat.
 
“Losing two-third of a kilometer every year to the desert calls for concern. It is time to really stand up to face this challenge. It is time to save our planet. It is time to reduce gas flaring, indiscriminate felling of trees and other activities that aid   desertification and global warming.
 
“It is also time emphasis is shifted from petroleum and other  fossil-based fuel that damage the atmosphere  to cleaner  sources of  energy such as solar power and ethanol. It is time our leaders had the political will to make this change,” Oni said.
 
Earlier the President of the Green Energy Society of Nigeria (GESON), Malam Rafindadi Rasheed who spoke through the Chairman of Society’s Committee on Agriculture, Chief James Awoniyi said the Society was formed to create awareness about the existence of the problem of climate change and global warming which according to him had done grave damage to the heath of the people, the habitat, ecology and the aquatic culture.
 
He said it was in realization of the task of making the change that the Society chose Governor Segun Oni as its National Project Champion to give the necessary muscle to achieve the set objectives.
 
Malam Rasheed   commended Oni for steps towards developing the state to green energy capital of Nigeria through the development of solar power and ethanol plants in the State.
