Oni Tasks Police, Others Over Murder Of Oyinlola’s Lawyer Published on January 1st, 2009

Ekiti State Governor, Engr. Segun Oni has urged men of the Nigerian Police, State Security Service (SSS) and other security agencies in the country to as a matter of urgency apprehend the murderers of Prince Adebisi Ogundere, one of the counsel to Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola’s in the ongoing election petition tribunal, who was killed by suspected assassins last Saturday.

In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the governor, Mr. Wale Ojo-Lanre, Governor Oni, in his reaction to the gruesome murder of Prince Ogundere expressed worry over the level of desperation some politicians have demonstrated in their quest for political power, adding that; “those who derive joy in taking other people’s life just to achieve temporary success must not be allowed to live among the people.”

“What happened in the case of Ogundere, who was in charge of the secretariat of Governor Oyinlola’s legal team headed by Otunba Kunle Kalajaiye (SAN), is to say the least, barbaric and satanic.

“How can people who have blood flowing in their veins drench a fellow human being with petrol and set him ablaze? This to me is the height of barbarism and the murder of Ogundere must not be allowed to go the way of other unresolved murder cases in this country.

“The police, SSS and other security agencies must therefore do everything possible to apprehend those behind this gruesome murder and make them face the full wrath of the law,” Oni said.

While calling on politicians in the country to be less desperate in their pursuit of their ambitions, Governor Oni said; “I have heard people make noise about electoral reform and my reaction has always been that politicians need the reform more than the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the electoral law.

“If people, who claim to be ‘democrats’ are forging police report, affidavits and other vital documents in their bid to get black market electoral victories through the courts and head of the secretariat of legal team to a party in an election petition is being killed in such a gruesome manner, then we all need to be on our kneels and pray to God so that desperate politicians don’t destroy Nigeria for us.

“Politicians in this country should stop playing God because it is only Him (God) that put people in positions.”

While condoling with Governor Oyinlola, Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the family of the slain lawyer, Governor Oni said; “The only way to console people whose relation, associate and friend was killed in this manner is for those who carried out the dastardly act to be brought to justice and I hope this will be done soonest.”
