British Chamber Of Commerce Commends Oni Published on December 18th, 2009

The Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce has commended the Ekiti State Governor, Engr. Segun Oni on his positive drive to reposition Ekiti State on a sustainable economic platform.


Speaking during a courtesy visit to the governor yesterday, the president of the group, Mr. Akinola Akintunde noted that the chamber was pleased with the giant strides of Governor Oni in making Ekiti an investment-friendly State.


“The chamber has followed carefully your pronouncements and actions particularly on issues of economic significance and infrastructural development, and creation of favourable climate in your state.


“We are convinced that you mean well for the good people of Ekiti State and are therefore here to show our support for these positive actions” he said


The chamber noted further that the governor’s recent budget presentation tagged, the “Budget of Assurance” amplified his realistic ambition to develop the state within the available resources.


It enjoined the state to take advantage of the private sector support in the overall development of the state, adding that the chamber is willing to join the government in its drive for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)


“Our chamber shares your aspirations and desire partnership with your government and willing to join you in your drive for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) needed for the continued development of physical and social economic infrastructure in the state.


In his response, the governor noted that his administration is on course in building a state that is ‘’rapidly responsive to development of world class standard”, adding that the state would in no distance future be a “very interesting case study”


“We have one of the most viable terrains in this part of the world. We are not exposed to too much of disasters, like gullies and erosion.


“So, we have a good opportunity to leverage on what God has given us to produce a world class state.


“We have embarked on massive infrastructural development. By next year, we will have the highest road density. We would have delivered over 800km by next year. We are using all these to propel a vision and that is to create a niche.


“It is not a general purpose niche, it must be specific. We are taking on our environment first and we are looking at the area of tourism.


“We have no excuse not to make tourism our selling point. We are going to do it in a diverse way” he said.


The governor also noted that the state would be a strong player in the area of green energy adding that there are already “two serious market of high prospect” working on biofuels in the state.


“We are aiming to be a biofuel capital of this continent. We are going to produce ethanol from sweet sorghum and from Jethropa, we intend to do aviation fuel”.
