Mare: Wewe Unveils The Rush To Get To The Summit Of Sub-Sahara's Highest Habitable Hill. Published on December 2nd, 2009
The government and people of Ondo state south-west Nigeria, are choosing the uniqueness of the the season to stage an unusual sporting event, MARE. “DO NOT FALL” at the hilly IDANRE town, for top-notch mountaineers from all parts of the world.
MARE is being jointly organized by the Ondo State Ministry of Culture & Tourism in collaboration with Motherland Beckons Incorporated led my Mr. Wale Akinboboye. The event which rose off this December is billed to be an annual event got from "MAREBO”, the yoruba word from "DONT' FALL". It is a mountain climbing competition in both professional and amateur categories.
Ondo State's Commissioner for Culture and Tourism Chief Tola Wewe told sharpedgenews.com that "mountaineers from all over the world would converge on Idanre to compete annually.
Mr. Wewe said that the reason for the choice of Idanre as the ultimate mountain climbing tourism destination in Sub-Sahara Africa is the beautiful array of hilly out-crops which served as natural landmarks against invaders in pre-colonial Nigeria.
According to the Commissioner, "Idanre hills have protected the people of Idanre. Many of them used to live on top of the hills. You have to climb between five to six hundred steps in order to get to the summit of the hills".
We hope by organizing this kind of festival there would be attention and that would secure the place of Idanre as an ultimate tourist destination.
Apart from the competition, we hope to spice it up as a cultural festival, there will be carnivals, dance and performance by musicians of international repute and would continue every year".
Mr. Wewe said that this December's event, the debut, is set to flag off the annual event.
